The Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K is renowned for attracting the crème de la crème of the running world, offering substantial bonuses for top performers and the potential for lightning-fast times, and 2023 is expected to maintain this exceptional standard come Sunday 9 July.
Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw, already the Women’s 10km World Record Holder in the Mixed Race (Men and Women) has made no secret that she is gunning for the Woman’s Only World Record of 30:01 that stands behind the name of Agnes Jebet (Kenya). Yehualaw knows the course is ideal to chase the record and with the traditionally perfect running weather on offer in Durban during July, there is no reason why she should not end up adding that record to her running CV as well. To that end the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K will also feature a separate elite women’s start, followed by the elite men’s and mass participation field, paving the way for Yehualaw, to challenge the women-only 10km World Record.
While a close eye will be kept on that record attempt, the incredible incentives on offer will, as they did in 2022, spur on the South African elite and with the standard improving the way that it has, chances are high that a big payday will be on offer at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K. Already South Africa boasts three men under 28 min of the current crop of runners and such is the depth at present, that more could well be added to that statistic.
SA 10km Record Holder, Precious Mashele has alluded to running a personal best. Should he better his time of 27:35, he stands to pocket a minimum of R100 000 (sub 27:40) and if he does dip below 27:30 the 32-year-old, who is in the shape of his life, will walk away with R120 000.
In form Glenrose Xaba who recently broke 32 min in the 10km for the first time will be looking to cash in too. With the stellar line up of Stella Chesang (Uganda), Frida Ndinda (Kenya), Edith Jepchumba (Kenya) and Neheng Khatala (Lesotho) all in the mix, there is no reason why Xaba will not be able to dip 31:50 and possibly even 31:40 which would earn her a bonus of R30 000 over and above the Prize Money on offer.
It is all shaping up to be yet another incredible day of racing on Sunday 9 July as the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K rolls into town.
“The caliber of talent participating at this year’s Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K is awe-inspiring, setting the stage for a thrilling display of athletic prowess,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “As the competition heats up, you can almost feel the anticipation surrounding the possibility of witnessing a world record being shattered. It’s a testament to the relentless spirit and unwavering dedication of these incredible athletes. We look forward to witnessing an exhilarating showcase of speed, endurance, determination and ultimately history in the making.”
