#RunYourCity in support of five local charities at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K

The 6th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K will hit the streets of Durban on Sunday 09 July 2023. When entering online runners and walkers can make a difference by supporting five local charities: 1. Reach For A Dream Foundation (RFAD), 2. Durban & Coast SPCA, 3. TREE (Training and Resources in Early Education), 4. LIV Village and 5. iThemba Lethu.

“We can’t wait for the action of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series to return to Durban in July,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “In addition to being part of a world class experience, runners and walkers can also make their entry count by supporting five prominent Durban Charities. Each charity fulfills a vital role in the city, and we are proud to continue showing our support in 2023.”

Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream (RFAD) seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams

“RFAD has been a charity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K since the event’s inception in 2017, and we have enjoyed every race to date,” says Kerry Donkin, Reach For A Dream Regional Manager. “We have been amazed at how communities have come out to support the race and all the charities involved. It has been a privilege to partner with this wonderful event. Runners know that your contribution can change a young life in ways that you will never believe. A dream gives them hope, joy, courage, and strength. It helps them to not give up and to keep fighting their illness. By supporting our cause, you inspire that hope.” For further information on Reach For A Dream please visit  www.reachforadream.org.za

The Durban & Coast SPCA rescues abused and neglected domestic, farm and wild animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership, providing a shelter for strays, and a veterinary service for pets of underprivileged people.

“It is always a great opportunity to put the ‘fun’ into ‘fundraising’ at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K,” says Tanya Fleischer, Durban & Coast SPCA Marketing Manager. “We are honored to continue this awesome partnership. It’s wonderful to see everyone come together and have such a great morning out, whilst helping their favorite charities at the same time. We use these funds to help feed the animals in our care and to fight the continual plight of animal cruelty that we face daily. We are always in need of cat/kitten and dog/puppy food, as well as blankets. You can add us as a beneficiary on your MySchool card, shop at our Charity Shops, donate secondhand goods for re-sale and lots more. Help us help our furry orphans. We hope you have a fabulous run!” For further information on the Durban & Coast SPCA please visit  www.spcadbn.org.za

Founded in 1984, TREE (Training and Resources in Early Education) is a non-profit organisation that specialises in Early Childhood Development (ECD), Resource and Training development of/for the ECD Workforce with a special focus on Women Empowerment.

“We are thankful and honored to be a charity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K,” says Ruby Motaung, TREE-ECD Director. “TREE’s vision is to become a globally recognized institution and a thought leader in the advancement of universal and quality early childhood education throughout the African continent. TREE’s mission is to facilitate and enable universal early childhood development through capacity building, partnerships, advocacy work, resource mobilization and knowledge management on a national scale and beyond. The donations received from entrants enables us to recruit and develop the capacity of the potential ECD Workforce. The skills and knowledge attained will eventually assist the ECD Workforce to establish ECD service centers in areas where there is no access to quality ECD services, mostly in deprived underserviced rural areas. The trained ECD Workforce will be able to facilitate child-led playful learning that develops the child executive function skills that will unlock the future.  We will further be able to provide educational resources that are age appropriate. This intervention is aligned to the National Integrated ECD Policy 2015. We would like to wish runners and walkers all the best! We look forward to meeting you and running with you at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K.” For further information on TREE please visit www.tree-ecd.co.za

Based in the community of Cottonlands, just outside of Verulam in Durban (KZN), LIV Village was founded in 2010 and first opened to mothers and children in August 2011.

It is the biggest honour to be a charity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K and be associated with brands like Absa and Stillwater Sports,” says Carita McCririe, LIV Durban. “We are excited to once again be part of the event and can’t wait to bring our mums and children to partake on race day. We would like to thank everyone at Absa and Stillwater Sports for their amazing support towards the vision of LIV. Like we always say – TOGETHER WE CAN rescue a child, restore a life, raise a leader and release a star. To each and every entrant, run with purpose. When you cross the finish line, know that you have not only reached a milestone in your life, but you have helped us to make a difference in the lives of many children who will one day change our nation.” For further information on LIV Village please visit www.liv-village.com

Since 2000, iThemba Lethu has been a transition home for many abandoned and vulnerable babies and children, providing a safe, loving and nurturing place as we work to re-unite them back into their biological families or find them new forever families through the process of adoption.

“We love being part of such a great city building event,” says Melissa Leslie, iThemba Lethu Co-Ordinator. “We are grateful to every runner that supported us in 2022. Together we are better! The funds raised enabled us to set up a jungle gym in our baby home’s garden. We also invested in a structured ECD programme to help our little ones learn through play and reach their full potential. Our message to entrants is to start somewhere and keep going! It’s the same principle with making a difference in our city when the need can seem so great – start somewhere – it does make a difference!” For further information on iThemba Lethu please visit www.ithembalethu.org.za
